Co-op revelations from the University of Victoria
While certainly interested in information literacy and the job description as posted, I had a co-op position at UVic the term immediately prior and looked forward to more of what I had come to enjoy and expect: interacting with dedicated, insightful and supportive librarians who treat co-op students like colleagues and provide them with meaningful projects.
Given my familiarity with McPherson Library, I was able to forgo some of the orientation processes, both formal and informal, and dive right into working with people I already knew. I nonetheless had a new learning period of adjusting to a different routine and responsibilities. I also moved into another office—nicer, and with a more permanent feel—which facilitated the transition.
However hands-off, Pia was supportive in everything I did and was quick to remind me she was always there if I needed additional guidance. This went beyond my projects and duties into mentorship in general and an ongoing exchange of insights about and critiques of the profession. Given my work in other areas, I spent a lot of time with other librarians and staff, all who freely answered my questions, engaged me in discussions and assisted me however they could.
My only (mild) regret is the aforementioned feeling of disconnection with some of the website redesign. As noted, I leapt in at the end and had not been hired for the WRAP group, anyway; there was only the incidental overlap and my eagerness to learn more. I find this an understandable and forgivable oversight, something I didn't even realize myself—that I would like to and would benefit from attending meetings, for instance—until it was too late.
