eTutorial

tutorialt

I created an online video tutorial to demystify the process for submitting an electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) to UVicDSpace, the University of Victoria’s institutional repository. While submission is fairly straightforward, it does require some less-than-intuitive actions that this step-by-step audiovisual demonstration makes clear so that students can submit their ETDs with confidence.

As a caveat to the tutorial’s length (nearly 8 minutes), the tutorial is procedural and I could not eliminate required steps to make it shorter. Had it been for information literacy or database instruction, I would have kept it brief or divided it into more digestible segments. Instructions for ETD submission are also available textually (in HTML and a PDF, both with screenshots), so the eTutorial is not required viewing.

Additionally, some of the images unbeknownst to me at the time turned out less than stellar because of all of the cobwebs on my castoff work lapbot’s ancient graphics card. *Sigh.

An American Abroad

As an American living in Canada suffering from election alienation—and subsequent absentee ballot jubilation, when the durn thing finally arrived—I thought it’d be fun to make a video about it to share with my family and friends. YouTube also thought it was a good idea and put me on its front page for a couple of days leading up to the November 2008 U.S. General Election. Discovered (no doubt due to my diligent tagging :P ) and favorited by PBS’ Video Your Vote project and featured by YouTube, my viewership went from 350 views to 4500 overnight and leapt by the tens of thousands from there.
